Today I read a paper titled “Rule-based Machine Learning Methods for Functional Prediction”

The abstract is:
We describe a machine learning method for predicting the value of a real-valued function, given the values of multiple input variables.

The method induces solutions from samples in the form of ordered disjunctive normal form (DNF) decision rules.

A central objective of the method and representation is the induction of compact, easily interpretable solutions.

This rule-based decision model can be extended to search efficiently for similar cases prior to approximating function values.

Experimental results on real-world data demonstrate that the new techniques are competitive with existing machine learning and statistical methods and can sometimes yield superior regression performance.

Today I read a paper titled “Wee partons in large nuclei: from virtual dream to hard reality”

The abstract is:
We construct a weak coupling, many body theory to compute parton distributions in large nuclei for $x\ll A^{-1/3}$.

The wee partons are highly coherent, non–Abelian Weizs\”{a}cker–Williams fields.

Radiative corrections to the classical results are discussed.

The parton distributions for a single nucleus provide the initial conditions for the dynamical evolution of matter formed in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions.

Today I read a paper titled “Shellsort with three increments”

The abstract is:
A perturbation technique can be used to simplify and sharpen A.

Yao’s theorems about the behavior of shellsort with increments $(h,g,1)$.

In particular, when $h=\Theta(n^{7/15})$ and $g=\Theta(h^{1/5})$, the average running time is $O(n^{23/15})$.

The proof involves interesting properties of the inversions in random permutations that have been $h$-sorted and $g$-sorted.
