This month I am studying “Massage therapy – Advanced massage”

2nd month of a 6 month class.

Update: Seems a bit slow. I wonder if I can accelerate this a bit by signing up for another class.

Today I read a paper titled “The problem of compatible representatives”

The abstract is:
The purpose of this note is to attach a name to a natural class of combinatorial problems and to point out that this class includes many important special cases.

We also show that a simple problem of placing nonoverlapping labels on a rectangular map is NP-complete..

Update: More people joined, we’re back up to 34 people. I think two classes merged together from the alternative nights of the week.

I generally refrain from attempting to use wittiness on customer service folks because no matter how original or clever I might think I am in that moment, it is almost assured that the customer service person (unless this is their first night) has already heard my clever observation or joke at least a dozen times that week.

The only reason they’re smiling and laughing is because their tip depends on it.

This month I am studying “Massage therapy – Intermediate massage”
2nd month and 3rd month of 3 months part-time

Six people remain. They run the intermediate class on alternate nights. I have increased my attendance (after talking to the instructor) and I can go through the programme faster.

Beating a hasty retreat

So the company I was doing some contracting for last week had a mandatory off-site retreat for the employees on Friday and Saturday. The company is a regular 10-to-6, Monday-through-Friday routine.

Which required the employees to use two personal vacation days to attend.

Don’t ask me why they needed to use vacation days, least of all a vacation day to attend on a Saturday.

They stated that it was mandatory that I attend, but as I was a contractor, I would have to pay my own way to attend.

I would have to pay for the hotel (fancy place at $450/night), food ($250/pre-catered) and the $1,600 course fees for whatever bullshit they had cooked up from an outside motivational speaker. A total of $2,750 to attend their mandatory retreat.

But the icing on the cake is, because I am a contractor and not actually working those two days because I will be at the mandatory retreat, I wouldn’t get paid for my time.

After confirming that they were serious, I quit.

The line they used on me after I stated that I was no longer interested in continuing the contract?

“This just shows you aren’t a team player and are not committed to our company vision.”

1st month of 3 month class.

Update: Just seven of us left now in the intermediate class. Six from the original group, plus a newcomer who took the basic class last year.
